21st October 2015 – It’s Back to the Future day!
Whilst I loved the film at the time, today I feel a little bit cheated that we don’t have hover-boards and flying cars. Sadly, very little of what the movie portrayed as “2015 life” has come true. But is the idea of imagining your future and your long-term goals in a far-fetched and perhaps unrealistic way really such a bad idea?
I’m all for setting SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound) goals, but why get too bogged down in the process? There’s a time and a place to be SMART. What’s wrong with dreaming big and getting creative about where you want to be in the more distant future? If you don’t have a vivid picture of what life could be like if anything was possible, then how can you ever plan for career success or personal satisfaction? Once you define your ideal end scenario, then you can start to put more realistic goals in place and take smaller steps towards your ultimate objective.
Imagine if the movie writers had painted a more realistic picture of life in October 2015 with no flying cars, no flux capacitor, no Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor. I doubt they would have captured the imaginations of so many of us who loved that film.
So what will YOU be doing in 1, 5, 10 years time? Make your goals amazing, make them exciting, make them goals you feel motivated to achieve.
Write them down now and make them happen!
