Back to Work Blues? ….. 5 Tips to Kick Start Your Day

So I’m back to work after a fantastic summer holiday and in need of a kick start to get me back into the swing of things…..  Motivation for me means refocusing and getting back into the coaching mindset. So here are 3 quick tips I’m following to get back into work fast after the holidays:

1. Remember what you enjoy

Before even turning on the computer, spend 5 minutes writing down what you enjoy about your job. It might be the social aspect, the challenge, even the chance to have a little time away from the kids!

After a great holiday we can sometimes dwell on the parts of work that we dislike and that’s what makes coming back to work so hard. So remind yourself what you really love about your job and you’ll immediately start feeling more positive. Do it now!

2. What’s your big picture?

You’ve had a week or two away from the daily grind. You’re already dreading the hundreds of emails and the even longer list of actions that you’ll inevitably find yourself wading through. So first – get real ! And realise that you’re only human and you can’t do 2 weeks work in 1 day.

Start by setting yourself some very clear goals for the week ahead. You might look to address 50% of your emails, complete 3 priority tasks and 2 less urgent actions from your list by the end of the week. It’s totally up to you but make sure you’re being realistic.

Asking yourself these questions can be really help to make these goals meaningful:

  • What are my most urgent tasks? (note that an urgent task is quite different from an important one!)
  • With each urgent task, what would happen if it wasn’t completed by week end? (this helps you prioritise your urgent actions)
  • If this was a close friend’s action list, which 2 items would you tell them to de-prioritise? (a bit of a reality check here for the over-ambitious!)
  • Finally – What might I be unintentionally avoiding? (this makes sure you’re thinking about your most challenging actions as well as the easy stuff)

Write your goals down neatly, keep them visible and up to date as you complete them to make sure you stay focused and on track.

3. Make a difference!

You probably feel great after your holiday! The rest and relaxation has done you no end of good so why lose that feeling?

‘Back to work’ doesn’t have to mean going back to your old ways of working….Not taking a lunch break? Emailing instead of talking directly to colleagues? Running meetings in the same old format? Ring any bells?

If your heart sinks when you even think about completing a certain task, find a  and tackle it differently! The saying ‘Same Old Thinking, Same Old Results’ is very apt here. Returning from holiday is an opportunity to shake things up and breathe new life into your job. You’ll certainly be keeping those holiday blues at bay for longer!

These are just a few ideas on how to kick start your week after a holiday without immediately feeling like you’ve never been away! What other ways do you get yourself motivated after the summer? Share your ideas with me – I’d love to hear from you!
